I recently turned 36 and I thought I would dedicate this post to the six years of my stay in the USA, because this stay shaped me into what I am today, here in front of you all. I have learned so many life lessons that every day was a learning curve for me, no matter how creepy the situation was.

I moved to the USA, to accompany my husband for his onsite project six years back, My mind was like a blank canvas when I moved, I left my past trauma behind and wanted to start fresh and make the best use of this new adventure called Life, I wanted to make this stay memorable for me and my family and build that bond stronger than before. This blank canvas attitude, helped me be empathetic towards others, helped me rectify my mistakes, and most importantly taught me so many lessons that shaped me into the person I am now today. So here on my blog, as I turned 36 this week, I want to write 36 lessons I learned in these beautiful six years. Here are my 36X6 mini-lessons of Living the life as an Expat.

  1. If I can do it anyone can do it!! Everything is possible in this world, just one should have the determination to do it.
  2. Cooking isn’t rocket science! Its basic use of proper ingredients at the proper time.
  3. When the mind is idle, turn it into a creative workshop, and see it giving birth to many beautiful things.
  4. What is important to you, may not be important to others, it is ok!! Accept that.
  5. NO need to be a people pleaser! That is outdated now.
  6. It is ok if your house is messy! making memories is more important.
  7. Inspire others with your good deeds, if at least one person got inspired by you, YOU won.
  8. No one is perfect in this world, so embrace your imperfections proudly.
  9. Be independent if possible, otherwise, at least keep yourself busy.
  10. Form your inner circle, where ever you go!! They are your family away from your family.
  11. The world is beautiful outside, go and meet people, make relationships.
  12. Convert your passion into real work, try and fail but don’t fail to try.
  13. Enjoy the little things in life, make memories.
  14. Throw that ‘Log KYA kahengein?’ ( What others will think) in trash! do what you want.
  15. Identify your inner strength! However small it may be, start using it as your power.
  16. Trust yourself more than anyone!
  17. Stop Judging people, it is so waste of time as it just multiplies negativity.
  18. Be vocal with what you want, no one can read your mind.
  19. Two eyes are watching over you 24X7, so be sure you set a good example.
  20. In this world where you can be anything, be each other’s strength in the family.
  21. Prioritize life’s wants and needs, Plan accordingly.
  22. If Plan A doesn’t work be ready with Plan B and Plan C.
  23. Opportunities don’t come to you, you need to go and knock them off.
  24. Learn good things from others when you meet them and try to implement them in your life.
  25. Let go of what if, I can’t, it is not possible, Be confident in whatever you do.
  26. You can’t change everyone around you, but you can change yourself.
  27. Stand UP for yourself, no matter what!
  28. When life throws lemons at you, don’t give up, make all the possible cocktails, margaritas with it and enjoy!
  29. Ask help if needed, sometimes you can’t do everything yourself.
  30. Be thankful for what you have.
  31. Don’t compromise on your Mental Health and Self Respect!! Don’t smell the small stuff too, let go.
  32. You have every right to say NO, to anyone, and you don’t need to apologize for it.
  33. Set up your boundaries, it matters!
  34. Silence is golden sometimes when life turns tipsy turvy.
  35. Keep Calm and focus on what you can control, not everything goes as per plan.
  36. Lastly, Nothing is permanent in life, one day we all have to leave this place, what matters is how many memories you made and how well you lived your life.
