During our summer vacation, we planned to organize a story time play date for our kids. We wanted to read a book with some moral story. So, when I came across this book named ‘ The Lion and the Mouse’ written by ‘ Jenny Broom ‘during my visit to the local library, I thought it was the perfect book for our storytime.
It is a modern version of the famous Aesop fable – The lion and the mouse, in which the ferocious lion realizes that the smallest animal can also help during the tough situations.
The kids got connected with the story instantly and were very curious to know what happened next. This was because of the peek through windows in the pages throughout the book which attracted them.
The illustrations which were done by Nahta Noj are very colorful and unique with cutouts in each page filled with geometric patterns like the semicircle based butterfly, triangle mouse throughout the book.
After the story time, we did a craft based on this story. We wanted our craft work to be simple and short. This craft is inspired from The Dad Lab.
Supplies needed:-
- White paper.
- Pencil
- Scissors.
- Crayons
Procedure:-
- Draw a random circle on the white paper, this is the face of the lion. Draw its eyes, nose, mouth and ears.
- Draw random straight lines from the circle to the end of the paper with some spacing between the lines.
- Ask the kids to color it with crayons.
- Lastly, ask them to cut the lines out.
This storytime was a huge success with our little ones. To my surprise, when I asked my kid the other day about this playdate she started telling me the story.
What is your kid’s favorite storytime book? Let me know in the comments section.

Lovely. Kids enjoy storytelling more when it is accompanied by craft activity. That’s a super awesome story. My daughter loved it when she was 4 years old.
