My daughter got introduced to writing when she was around 3 and 1/2 year old. Initially I did not focus much on writing, it was more of scribbling as I wanted her to get the grip of the pencil. Once she was comfortable with it, I introduced alphabets to her. It was tough initially to make her sit at one place and write. But with lots of practice, she started writing uppercase and lowercase letters.
As days passed by, we both were done with writing on the easel, practicing different activity books etc. I wanted to make writing more interesting to her as she was bored with writing the alphabets daily. After a lot of thinking I got this idea of traditional letter writing. In this way she can practice writing at the same time get to know about the old-fashioned way of handwritten letters. As her friends are of the same age, I put forth this idea to our play date friends and to our surprise all of them agreed to it. My little one loves to check mails from the mailbox every day so explaining this concept to her was easier for me. Initially I wanted the letters to be as simple as possible, so I started with sentences like
How are you?
How is your school?
Etc.
Later I introduced season’s greetings with their friends names and greetings for special occasions with some artwork.
As we all live in same community it was easy to post the letters in their mailbox. The kids love to post letters by themselves pretending to be the UPS guy.
Though she is still small to read, she started picking up few sight words while writing. I can see happiness on her face when she receives a letter from her friends.
Do your kids write letters to their friends? If not , start by writing letters within your community and keep this tradition alive.

Having read this I thought it was extremely informative. I appreciate you spending some time and effort to
put this informative article together. I once again find
myself personally spending a significant amount of time both reading and posting comments.
But so what, it was still worth it!

Writing the old fashion way is such a treasure. I am sad that most people do not use it. The internet has taken over many of our lives. Yes, it’s easier. Although, for kids schools should have a pen pal thing…like I would love to share letters with your daughter the old fashion way, Bless Your Heart Jackie

Lovely! My 8-year-old niece and I are penpals, and write each other letters or send cards. Sporadically. But it is great to see her writing and enjoying writing.
